Uploading clips you already have

Adding clips that were cut somewhere else, from a phone, an AI camera's app, or another editor, straight to a game.

Most coaches use Clip film and never touch this page. Upload is for clips that already exist as separate files: highlights an AI camera's app exported, a short video a parent shot on a phone, or plays cut in another editor.

Uploading

  1. Open Upload from the top menu and choose the game from the menu at the top. Adding a game on the team's Games page also lands you here.
  2. Drop the video files on the box, or click it to choose them. Several at once is fine; three upload at a time.
  3. When they are done, View the game opens the game with the new clips ready to tag.

File names become clip titles, so name them the way you want them to read, or number them so they sort in game order (01, 02, 03...). You can rename any clip afterwards on the game page.

What plays

Clips need to play in a web browser, which means MP4 or MOV files with H.264 video. That covers what phones, GoPros, and the AI cameras export by default. A file that uploads but shows a blank player is usually HEVC (H.265) from an iPhone set to "High efficiency"; switch the phone's camera format to "Most compatible", or export the clip from the Photos app, and upload again.

About a minute after a clip uploads, Sideline makes a copy of it for phones (720p, plus a smaller Data saver copy and a still for the clip list). That copy plays in every browser, so even an iPhone clip in "High efficiency" format plays for everyone once it is ready; the original stays as Download original.

Big files upload in pieces. If the connection drops, the phone locks, or you leave the page, pick the same file again on the same game and the upload picks up where it stopped instead of starting over. On a phone, keep Sideline open with the screen on while it uploads; Sideline tries to keep the screen awake for you.

Keep clips short. A play is 8 to 15 seconds and 15 to 25 MB; a whole quarter as one clip is not what the reels are built for.

After uploading

Tag each clip on the game page: play type, who is in it, and awards. Untagged clips appear in the game but on nobody's reel. See Tagging and awards.
