Getting started as a coach

Set up your team, invite families, and turn your first game recording into tagged plays.

A coach's first season on Sideline is five steps. The first three take ten minutes and you only do them once. The last two are the weekly rhythm: clip the game, tag the plays.

1. Sign in and create your team

Sign in at app.sidelinemoments.com with the invitation you were sent (see Signing in). Your team is set up for you by your league or by Sideline, and it is waiting on the Teams page. Coaching a team on your own? Ask for one at app.sidelinemoments.com/#/start with your season dates; it's usually ready within a day, and you'll get an email to sign in. Anything else, email team@sidelinemoments.com.

2. Enter the roster

Open Roster from the top menu. Enter each player's jersey number and, optionally, their name. Numbers are what you tag clips with, so get those right; names are only shown to your own team.

Save the roster before you invite parents. A parent's first screen asks them to pick their player, and they can only do that if the roster is there.

3. Invite parents and coaches

The quickest way for a whole team: open Members, select Create invite link, and paste the link into your team's group chat. Families ask to join, pick their player, and you approve them in one list. See Invite your team with one link.

To add one person directly, open Members, enter an email address, choose Parent or Coach, and select Add. With email invite checked, Sideline emails them a temporary password and the steps to sign in. Uncheck it if you would rather text them: the temporary password is shown to you once.

Coaches can do everything on the team: clip, upload, tag, edit the roster, and invite. Parents can watch, download, tag which players are in a clip, and add and tag photos. Awards stay with coaches.

The Members table shows who has signed in and who has not. A pending invite can be resent; that issues a new temporary password and cancels the old one. See Roster and members.

4. Clip the game

You do not upload the game recording. Open Clip film, create the game (or pick it), and choose the recording on your computer. Play it at 2x, press I when a play starts and O when it ends, and press Q for the one you just missed. When you are done, Cut & upload cuts every play out of the film right there in the browser and uploads only the plays, each about 15 to 25 MB.

A full game takes about 20 minutes once you have done one. Everything about marking, trimming, Exact and Fast cuts, saving clips to your computer, and stitching a highlights reel is in Clip film.

Already have clips cut some other way? Drop them on the Upload page instead. See Uploading clips.

5. Tag the plays

Open the game. Each clip has a panel under the video: set the play type (offense, defense, kickoff, and so on), tap the jersey numbers of the players in the clip, and give out awards. Tagging is what builds every player's reel and the awards board, so it is worth doing for every clip. See Tagging and awards.

After the game, Awards in the top menu, switched to that game, is the list of stickers to hand out.

Weekly rhythm

  1. Record the game.
  2. Same evening: Clip film, 20 minutes.
  3. Tag the plays. Ask an assistant coach to help; more than one coach can tag at once.
  4. Families watch that night, and the awards list is ready for practice.
