Tags are what turn a pile of clips into something families care about. Every tag says "this player is in this play" or "this player earned this award in this play". Reels, the awards board, and the post-game sticker list are all built from tags, so a clip nobody tagged appears on nobody's reel.
Coaches and parents can both tag which players are in a clip. Only coaches set play types, rename clips, and give awards. Anyone on the team can tag photos.
The clip panel
Open a game. Under the video, the panel for the current clip has, for a coach:
- Title. Click to rename. Clips from Clip film are named Play 001, Play 002, and so on; a name like "TD run, 2nd quarter" is nicer for families.
- Play type. Offense, defense, kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return, PAT, field goal, two-point, special teams. Shows on the clip in the list.
- Units. Your saved groups of players, like the O-line or the kickoff team. One tap tags the whole unit into the clip; tap a lit unit again to take it back off (anyone with an award on that play stays). See Units below.
- In this clip. A button for every player on the roster, with their number and first name. Tap the players who are in the play. Tap again to remove.
- Award. Tap a sticker, say π₯ Pancake, and the player buttons switch to "Give Pancake": tap each kid who earned it, then Done. Giving an award also marks the player as in the clip.
- On this clip. Everything tagged so far. β on a tag removes it. β next to the title deletes the clip and its video, with a few seconds to Undo.
Parents see the same panel with just In this clip: they can tap players to tag them and remove player tags, but award tags have no β for them and units and stickers aren't shown.
Under the video, Tagged 12 of 54 shows how far along the game is, and Next untagged jumps to the next clip nobody is in yet. Next and Prev, or the arrow keys, step through every clip. Tags save the moment you tap them; there is no save button. When the last clip is tagged, the panel says so, names any player who isn't in a single clip from that game, and links to the game's awards.
On a phone the panel sits right under the video and Prev, Next untagged and Next stay at the bottom of the screen, so a whole game can be tagged one-handed.
Coach only next to the play type hides a clip from parents. Use it for a play centred on a player whose family didn't consent to sharing (see Roster), or anything you only want for coaching. Untick it to share the clip again.
Units
A unit is a group of players who take the field together. Make one on any clip: tap the players, then Save these 9 as a unit and give it a name. The clip's play type is saved with it, so on the next offense clip your offense unit is listed first. Rename units, change who's in them, set their play type, or remove them under Team settings β Units (or Edit units on the clip panel). A team can have up to 12.
Keyboard shortcuts
On a computer:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| A jersey number | Tags that player (for "1" vs "12", press Enter or pause) |
| U | Tags the first unit in the list |
| A | Picks the next award to give; then type numbers |
| Esc | Done giving the award |
| N | Next untagged clip |
| β β | Previous and next clip |
| , . | Step one frame back or forward |
The awards
Every team starts with the same set of stickers:
| Award | |
|---|---|
| Touchdown | π |
| Pancake | π₯ |
| Tackle for loss | π |
| Sack | π₯ |
| Big hit | π¨ |
| Great block | 𧱠|
| Interception | π |
| Fumble recovery | π |
| Hustle | β‘ |
| Sportsmanship | π€ |
A player can earn the same award more than once in a game, and more than one player can earn an award on the same play (a touchdown and the block that sprang it).
Where tags show up
- Players. Each card counts the player's clips, awards, and photos. Their page tallies their awards, lists every clip they are tagged in (newest game first), and Play reel runs them back to back.
- Awards. The season board: one row per player, one column per award, with totals. Click a player to watch the plays behind the numbers.
- Awards to hand out. On the Awards page, switch the menu from Whole season to a single game. Only the awards actually earned in that game are shown, with a sticker count. That is the list to read from at the next practice. A game page also links straight to it: Awards from this game.
Tips for tagging fast
- Tag right after Cut & upload while the game is fresh. Save your units once (offense, defense, kickoff, punt) and most clips are one tap plus a fix or two.
- Split it: one coach takes offense clips, another takes defense. More than one coach can tag at the same time; the list updates as you move between clips.
- Every kid on the field in the play, not just the ball carrier, gets an "in this clip" tag. That is what makes the linemen's reels exist.
- Be generous with Hustle and Sportsmanship. They are the awards that reach the kids who never touch the ball.
Play types and awards for other sports
The play types and award list are football today. Flag football, soccer, and basketball teams can still tag players in clips and use the awards that fit (Hustle, Sportsmanship, Big hit). Sport-specific award sets are on the roadmap; tell us what your league hands out at team@sidelinemoments.com.
